The TIFR was a much talked-of building when it opened in 1962, proclaiming India's modest aspirations. The architectural frames in an open gallery held splendid views of the sea with changing light and clouds. People came to see the freestanding, cantilevered RCC stairway rising to the mezzanine floor.
